The Liebster Award: Bloggers Recognizing Bloggers

A few weeks ago I was surprised with one of the most thoughtful gestures I’ve received as a blogger. My friend, Patty, nominated me for a Liebster Award. I met Patty, who blogs on all things ‘bright side of life’ over at Positively Patty, at Blissdom Canada last October but I remember her well from the previous year’s conference. She rocks a hat like nobody’s business, exudes a genuinely positive nature always and dances like it’s 1999. Plus, she gets what it’s like to have four kiddos. Long story short: we clicked.

The Liebster award is conveyed from one blogger to another for blogs with fewer than 200 followers. Do you know anyone deserving of this recognition? To participate, you must accept the nomination, answer the questions which were given to you and nominate some new deserving bloggers! http://www.diaryofadomesticdiva.comWith this nomination comes no promise of an awards ceremony, no little golden statue or even a free lunch. Rather, with this nomination comes recognition in the form of a virtual ‘high five’, which, let’s face it, as a smaller blogger is about the next best thing to ‘big fat paycheck’. Am I right? There is little more gratifying than knowing that somewhere in a little corner of this vast web space, someone has thought your writing worthy of acknowledgement.

So, What Is a Liebster Award?

To be fair, I had to look up the origins of the Liebster award. First of all, this virtual award exists only on the internet, and is bestowed unto bloggers by fellow bloggers. By all accounts the earliest known Liebster, which is German for ‘dearest’ for ‘favourite’, was given 2011. The only requirement is that the nominated blogs have a small-but-mighty following of less than 200 subscribers.

Liebster Award Rules

Now, with respect to nominations, I’m going mostly by Facebook following, since I don’t have insight to specific numbers of blog subscribers. That being said, most of the blogs I have chosen have between 150 and 750 followers at last count. But then, some blogs were because I really enjoy reading them. So, really, the rules are being loosely interpreted here. 🙂

In accepting this nomination — as one can choose to not accept it — the nominee must return the favour or pay it forward, as it were, but not before reading the rules for the Liebster Award Nomination.

Positively Patty’s Questions for Diary of a Domestic Diva

  1. Four words to describe yourself?
    • perfectionist | determined | loyal | confident
  2. Who inspires you?
    • Strong people inspire me: those who are strong of spirit, strong of mind and strong of character. They come from all areas of my life: family, friends, colleagues and tribe mates. I try to surround myself with these people daily, whether in my online or offline life as they are the ones to push me to be better, strive higher and reach further.
  3. Link your most favorite post you’ve ever written and tell us why it’s your favorite.
    • I’ve written several candid posts of which I’m very proud — some, especially, were difficult. Sometimes the very best posts are the ones that are written from the heart, without too much thinking and analyzing.
That was the case with this post, which I wrote during a difficult tween parenting moment. While I was feeling a bit hurt when I began writing, my goal was to turn it into a message of understanding. Of love.
  4. What song is stuck in your head at this very moment?
    • I keep coming back to this question and drawing a blank, which is interesting given how much we love singing and dancing around here. I will say that lately I find myself singing the same two bars of “7 Years” on a loop because I can never remember the rest of the words.

  5. What motivates you to blog?
    • At the risk of sounding cliché. I blog for the love of it. Writing is my jam. As someone who has been putting pen to paper since the age of five, there is an instant gratification that comes with knowing my words are finally connecting with an audience of more than just one. Also I love drawing emotion out. I love it when people tell me I’ve made them laugh or cry or make a change in their lives.
  6. Have you ever had writer’s block and if so what do you do to overcome it?
    • Goodness, yes! Why do you think it’s taken me a month to finish this post? So often, my mind is crowded-to-overflowing with ideas and yet, when I sit to write, I can’t seem to string together a coherent thought. This Liebster writing exercise is forcing my hand and I’m grateful. Sometimes that’s what it takes: a push to get going.
  7. If you were to name three goals for your blog to achieve this year, what would they be?
    • to double my monthly readership
    • to partner with three major brands
    • to at least match the monthly income I make with my regular part-time job
  8. How long does it usually take you to finish a blog post?
    • Ugh. Too long. I edit. I edit again. And again. And I’m obsessed with putting up really great shareable images and, honestly, that probably takes longer to do (select the image, edit the image…) than writing the actual blog post! I’ll spend four-to-five hours on a post easily. Sometimes longer over the course of 2-3 days, leaving it and coming back to it. I definitely have blogging-efficiency issues.
  9. What is the greatest achievement you have received as a blogger?
    • Ironically, though not a paid writing opportunity (which, of course, is the goal of every blogger) being published on HuffPost twice was pretty exhilarating.
  10. What three novels would you recommend to anyone because you couldn’t put them down?
    • The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
    • The entire Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
    • Come Away With Me by Karma Brown (but that’s a whole other blog post)
  11. What would you do at this moment — right now — if you knew, without a doubt, you would not fail?
    • Run a half-marathon. Notice I’m not completely delusional and didn’t say ‘marathon’? Actually, I changed my mind. If I knew I would not fail I would quit my job and start my own business.
