I heart a good deal. I also heart a little pampering. So when you combine the two, it’s a match made in a tired mama’s heaven. Months ago my husband gifted me with a Living Social coupon for a day of pampering at Wellington Studio Salon and Spa, in Aurora; a salon I have driven past but never frequented.
Now, before I continue, I should mention that I am a die-hard Aveda kinda gal and, while I am not committed to one place, I do have my go-to hair guy. I should also mention that I rarely get out for salon treatments (especially after a pedi gone wrong) and I get my hair cut maybe four times a year. Maybe. However, I am not above trying out a new hairstylist or aesthetician, especially if it means saving a few dollars. In fact, I tried out another local salon with another of those daily deal coupons several months ago and was vastly disappointed. So trying out another spot, sight unseen, was sort of a leap of faith with the first go-’round having backfired. Luckily, my experience was entirely different and 100% satisfactory.
Now, what was once the spacious Wellington Studio Salon and Spa, located on Wellington Street East in Aurora recently changed location and is now the newly rebranded, much more intimate The Green Door Day Spa, on Yonge Street.
This compact spa, at a mere 700-or-so square feet, has everything you need to be pampered, whether it is a 30-minute treatment or an entire day of R&R. Minimally furnished, with accents in earthy greens and browns, the space has an unmistakable organic feel. In fact it is the goal of the owners to use and offer as comprehensive a selection of organic products as possible.
Unaware that the salon had moved, I arrived late to my appointment (after telephoning ahead) but was nonetheless greeted warmly at the door. It should be noted that in this situation it is The Green Door Day Spa‘s policy (understandably) to shorten a service so as not to inconvenience the next client. My visit included a manicure, pedicure, one-hour relaxation massage, one-hour facial and hair cut and color. Since manicures on me last about, oh, seven and a half minutes, I opted to cut short that service and just have polish applied. No way was I going to skimp on the massage! My aesthetician, was lovely, personable and skilled. She did each one of my treatments, explaining procedures and products along the way, each service flowing seamlessly into the next.
We began with the relaxation massage (which, while enjoyable, was not entirely relaxing as I felt a bit chilly even under the blankets). This was followed by my favorite treatment, the facial. When I mentioned I was chilly, I was promptly provided with a heating pad under my feet which felt soooo cozy. (Note to self: Next time, SPEAK UP!) Afterwards, I was given a summary of the products which had been used on my skin, which were from the line Éminence Organic Skin Care of Hungary.
Next we moved on to the pedicure, which was done first by soaking my tender tootsies in a stainless steel bowl filled with hot water, a much more hygienic procedure compared to the jet tubs of most salons. During this time the aesthetician expertly and efficiently painted my finger nails after which she moved me over to the the massage table where I was able to recline while she worked comfortably on my feet.
Once I was buffed and painted, I was accompanied by the hairstylist to a smaller room for my haircut and color. After a brief consultation I opted to upgrade, for a minimal fee, to some honey highlights. And while I am not generally a small-talker, I had an immediate rapport with both the aesthetician and the stylist that made it easy and effortless to chat.
The Green Door Day Spa offers warmth, professionalism and personalized service. The staff there are experienced, courteous and engaging which is key to creating an experience that makes patrons want to return.
