Who Am I?

Hi! I’m Erica Gomez, the ‘Domestic Diva’ as it were. Welcome and thank you for stopping by and taking the time to get to know a little about me and my blog. This is me. This is my place. The place where grey hairs, wrinkles, kitchen dance parties and an endless supply of cookies and writing material abound.

A 42-year old banker-turned-baker-turned-blogger (not necessarily in that order and oftentimes all three), I grew up with a love of books and a propensity for writing poetry and really bad songs. I’ve kept a diary since the age of five and been an avid baker for as long as I can remember. At my core, things have not changed much.

Though I was born in Saint John, NB, I actually lived in Segovia, Spain, until the age of six, with my parents and two younger brothers. However, despite being in Canada since 1980 (Fredericton, NB until 1999, Moncton, NB until 2000, Montreal, QC until 2005 and finally Aurora, ON) my roots are finely ingrained in Spanish culture — especially the food. I’m blessed with four ridiculously-different-but-equally-wonderful children who are my daily aggravation inspiration and a husband who supports my creativity, fills our bellies and keeps this ship afloat (read: does all the laundry) even during the stormiest days.

Why Do I Blog?

I blog because it’s fun. What began as a creative outlet somewhere between 7-10 years ago gradually morphed into something more permanent.

I blog to make you think orThere are plenty of good reasons to want to earn an income from my blog. Supporting my Starbucks habit is just one of those reasons. http://diaryofadomesticdiva.com laugh or cry or fist pump.

I blog because the struggle is real, to quote an oft-overused phrase. Seriously. I could write for days about s**t my kids say and do.

I blog to inspire others to want to be their best selves, particularly mothers, whose self-care and wellness are more important than ever.

I blog to support my Starbucks habit. And eventually maybe to pay for a family vacation. Thinking BIG, here, folks!

I blog to influence. I am very proud to have worked on ad campaigns with some major brands and affiliates including Netflix Canada, UNICEF, Mabel’s Labels, Blurb and PAM.

ToughMudder1What Gets Me Excited?

Sharing my personal stories and connecting with my readers is incredibly rewarding. Being able to do so in collaboration with brands that fit seamlessly into those life moments is the ultimate achievement, particularly on the topics of fitness, food and family fun.

FITNESS

If you’re following my #fit40s journey then you’ll see that promoting health, wellness and physical fitness for women — and even men — in their 40s is a major focus of mine. In fact, it has become a bit of a passion to take on new challenges and inspire those around me to make those positive changes.

As a result I have become an Active for Life Role Model and am thrilled to be collaborating with my fitness mentor, Dai Manuel, in the coming months.

FOODIE-ISM

I like my time in the kitchen to be efficient, so when it comes to feeding my children, my meals are simple and quick — hardly gourmet. Get in and get out, I say. If you've ever indulged in a Starbucks Cranberry Bliss bar and wondered if you could make it yourself, you absolutely can! And it is delicious! Find the recipe at http://diaryofadomesticdiva.comI leave the fancy cooking to my husband.

However, rediscovering my joy of baking has led to some really wonderful moments with my kiddos. Now when they see me break out the flour and eggs their eyes light up in anticipation and, really, is there any better feeling? I still make a pretty big deal of their birthdays, which is a whole other blog.

FAMILY FUN

Being a family of six, our travel budget is limited. Whether it’s a week at a rented cottage by the beach or three days exploring Ottawa, my kids relish every moment of the experience and I love talking, Tweeting and Instagramming about it!

We have just as much fun at home, whether it’s exploring our local public library, parks and restaurants or enjoying family game and movie nights. Plus, partnering with fantastic, family-friendly brands gives me the opportunity to bring some of these fun experiences — and special perks — to my readers.

  1. Attended the moms& daughter evenhosted by Dove Canada, last Tuesday in aurora. Thank you to you, Erica, Alex and Patricia for your caring warmth and encouragement. I think I got in at the last minute on a ‘technicality’, as the event was booked, but thankfully Heather at superstore found a way to fit my daughter and I in. Not only did Jy daughter and I get a lot out of the event itself, I connected (socially at least) with some awesome women.

    • Hi, Lori. I am so pleased to hear that you found value in the workshop and that you and your daughter enjoyed yourselves. These discussions are very important and it is lovely to connect with other moms whose goal is simple: to raise self-aware, confident and happy young ladies. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I will be sure to pass along your kind words to Alex and Patricia, as well as to the event coordinators at Yummy Mummy Club and Dove. ~ Erica
