Apple-Picking at Applewood Farm and Winery

Those hot, sticky summer days have been replaced by an unmistakable and not-at-all unwelcome crispness in the air. The kids are back in school. Swimsuits and Crocs have been replaced with sweaters and boots. The leaves are slowly turning.

Yes! It’s that time of year again! And while I am sad to see summer go, one of my all-time favorite family activities in the fall is to go apple-picking. This is a tradition that started before my eldest daughter could walk and, since moving to Ontario in 2005, we have continued the tradition at Applewood Farm and Winery.

A family-run business for over 30 years, Applewood Farm and Winery‘s 87-acre farm offers pick-your-own strawberries, raspberries, apples and pumpkins. Wagon rides, a corn maze, playground and petting zoo make it a fun visit for kids of all ages. Fear not, moms and dads, you can enjoy a tasting of some of Applewood Farm and Winery‘s award-winning fruit wines. A chilled cider, like an ice wine, makes the perfect accompaniment to a seared foie gras with caramelized apples, for the gourmand in you.

Every year since we have been here we have taken our growing family to Applewood Farm and Winery and I thought it would be fun to reflect on these special moments in a little video montage.

Fortunately, Applewood Farm and Winery managed to escape the fate that befell many Ontario apple orchards and still has an ample selection of apples from the sweet to the tart. So, there is still time for you to get out with your family and enjoy one of the season’s most wonderful past times. My one piece of advice is to get there early, especially if you are visiting on the weekend. There is plenty of parking but it fills up quickly!
