Cheers, Mom! It’s Your Birthday.

Cheers, Mom! It's your birthday. Remembering loved ones on their birthday is tough.

I was a babe in my mother’s arms, 1974

I’m feeling like my mom deserves a happy birthday wish. She would have been 67.

She appreciated every year and celebrated her birthdays with relish. Her last birthday on this earth was her 50th and it was wonderful. Certainly, it was one of her most meaningful birthdays and I remember working so hard to make it special.

Her longtime, childhood friend, Connie came, knowing, I’m sure, it would be the last time they would see each other. My grandparents were there, too. A low key, family gathering.

Somewhere I have a photo of her from that day, but I can’t seem to find it. In it, she is sitting, smiling joyfully, dressed in white, her salt-and-pepper hair cropped short. It’s the smile I remember most.
I think we had just served up cake — lemon poppyseed, of course.

God, I miss her.

Happy birthday, Mom. I love you.
