I Had to Google Alan Rickman

Yes, it’s true.

I saw the news in my numerous feeds this morning that British actor, Alan Rickman, has died.

And yet the name of the actor did not immediately click. Shame on me. Yes, I know.

Alan Rickman: 1946-2016 He embodied the character of Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series and yet I still had to google his name when I saw that he had passed away. He played the part of a villain so well that we loved to hate him. http://diaryofadomesticdiva.com

Then it hit: Professor Severus Snape.

You see, when an actor, as obviously talented as he, embodies a character so fully that you actually forget his real name, it is a testament to his craft. (It’s also a testament to my forgetfulness.)

Actors are agents of change. A film, a piece of theatre, a piece of music, or a book can make a difference. It can change the world. ~ Alan Rickman

Of course, Alan Rickman’s resumé goes much further back than the days of Harry Potter. Anyone who has seen Die Hard or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves or Love Actually can attest to that. And even though his roles were varied, I think he played the part of a villain superbly.

We are big fans of the Harry Potter series — first the books and, subsequently, the movies — which we continue to enjoy in waves as each child moves up the reading ranks and the series begins all over again. Rickman embraced the character of Professor Snape so seamlessly and that is how he will be remembered to us.

It saddens me when a true talent leaves this earth and with the loss of David Bowie just days ago — ironically at the same age — it’s been a week. However, we are blessed that the iconic characters that Rickman brought to the big screen — much like the personae Bowie created with his music — will live on.
