Rehtaeh Parsons: Why you should never forget her name

Rehtaeh Parsons.

If you haven’t heard the name, well, how’s life under that rock?

I’m not here to wax philosophical about the cause and effect of bullying. Of rape. Of ignorance. Of blatant disregard for humanity. But I DO want you to read this heartwrenching blog post written by Glen Canning, Rehtaeh Parsons’ father. To US, the people. To the public. To the politicians. To the media. To the kids who did this to her. And to the adults who failed her. Who DISAPPOINTED her. Who drove her to do the unthinkable.

Because to take her own life would be the only way she could find peace.

To some, this is just another casualty. To most, an outrage. To me, this was like a swift kick in the stomach. Because how could we let this happen?

To be honest, I held off as long as possible before clicking on one of the many links flying through my news feed to Mr. Canning’s blog post. As predicted, my heart slammed into my chest, words blurring through the tears. Mr. Canning’s grief is palpable; his sorrow beyond anything I could imagine. The love for his daughter, indisputable.

That these realities continue to happen proves that we are failing our children. Words are falling on deaf ears. That these stories continue to surface in the media is frightening. That children delight in the degradation of another child is inconceivable. Yet, it happens. And this won’t be the last time.

Humanity is broken and we need to fix it.
