The Hairy (and not-so Hairy) Business of Aging

I turned 40 this month.

And while growing older has its perks…most of which escape me at this moment…apparently now weird hair situations are happening.

Like grey hairs. In special places.

Long, wiry chin hairs.

Add to the mix that I found a sudden bald spot on my head and we have a bit of a situation.

My mother embraced her grey hair and so do I. I just embrace it with highlights.

Chin hairs can be plucked. Buggers.

But this sudden baldness has me more than a little frazzled. I discovered it as I was idly running my fingers through my hair (as girls are wont to do) while watching the Grammy broadcast on Sunday night.

“OH, MY GOD! OH, MY GOD! I’M BALDING!” I commented nonchalantly to my husband as I gently slammed his hand on the back of my head to confirm my worst fears.

There may have been whimpering. And extra wine pouring.

So I did what any normal person would do. I grabbed my camera.

Behold. Full on, size-of-toonie, smooth, shiny bald spot just above the nape of my neck.

The Hairy (and not-so-Hairy) Business of Aging: Sudden bald spot on my head!

Sudden bald spot in shape of circle or oval is referred to as Alopecia Areata

And then I did the next thing any normal person would do.

I Googled “sudden bald patch on head”.

Alopecia Areata is my unofficial self-diagnosis.

I’ll let you know what the doctor says.

*Runs for more wine.*

  1. I’m just curious if you wear ponytails a lot – because maybe that can also cause it?

    • I guess I wear my hair equal parts up and down. But I would think that would be more gradual. Disconcerting nonetheless.
