In case you missed it, I have the coolest Chiropractor.
And if you’ve got any kind of chronic back or hip pain or find yourself leaning slightly to the right (or left) — not to be confused with ‘dressing to the right (or left)’ — then you, my friend, had better run to your chiropractor.
But what if I told you Chiropractic was not just about fixing aches and pains?
Because chiropractic care has become a regular part of my family’s wellness plan, I asked my doctor, Dr. Jennifer Murray, to break down Chiropractic, for those of you who may see it as a bit of an enigma, and why it should absolutely become part of your family’s overall wellness plan.
So, Dr. Jen, what is Chiropractic?
This is a question everyone asks me. People have heard of Chiropractors but don’t really know what they do. Chiropractic is a non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. We supply a diagnosis after a thorough examination and then provide treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.
So what does all that mean?
Essentially, Chiropractors look at the bones and joints of primarily your spine but also all through your body and assess them for alignment and irregularities. Your spinal column protects the spinal cord which transmits information from your brain out to every muscle, organ, tissue and cell in your body.
When the bones and joints of the vertebral column lose their proper mobility, alignment and/or functional ability they irritate the nerves passing between them and these fixations affect the ability of that nerve to properly transmit information to the body. This distortion of information affects function of muscles, ligaments and joints, which can lead to imbalances and, eventually, to pain.
Enter the Adjustment – sounds intimidating but I love it. Can you explain how it works?
When Chiropractors find joints that are not functioning properly we provide treatment via something called the “adjustment”. The adjustment can be delivered a number of different ways including manually (with my hands) or with lower force techniques such as drop pieces on the table or a small adjusting instrument. This is a very safe, effective and comfortable treatment – you will love it! The adjustment is often accompanied by soft tissue therapy, exercises, nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.

Top 3 Reasons Why Chiropractic Should Be Part of Your Family’s Wellness Plan
1. So, now, why seek out Chiropractic?
Chiropractic care can provide symptomatic relief for patients with acute and chronic conditions but the primary focus is on general health and well-being of patients. Most new patients see me due to a painful “boo-boo” and what I strive to do with treatment is to get patients out of acute pain and then educate them about the benefits of preventive care – keeping the spine and other joints of the body in good alignment to PREVENT pain.
2. My kids have received chiropractor care since birth. It has been especially helpful through ‘growing pains’ and for combatting allergies. Why is this so important?
Chiropractic care is very important for children – “as the twig is bent, so grows the tree”. Children bump and thump their way through life, not feeling the little things that can lead to bigger issues as adults. Chiropractors can correct these misalignments as well as help boost immune systems, correct postures (from video games and cell phones), resolve headaches and sleep issues.
3. And it’s not just about the back!
So true! Chiropractic care is not just about back pain! Although we very effectively treat lower back pain we also work with: headaches, migraines, sinus congestion, jaw pain, neck pain, upper back pain, rib pain, repetitive strain injuries, shoulder issues, elbow issues, athletic injuries as well as improving athletic performance, working to achieve healthy pregnancies, arthritic management in seniors, hip and knee issues, foot and ankle issues including plantar fasciitis, colicky babies, torticollis in babies and much more!
[Sidebar: While I am currently seeing Dr. Jen more frequently since my fall and elbow break in July, I also mentioned I had a numb toe thing going on. Did you know you can adjust a toe?? I’ve noticed marked improvement since she began that little toe yank!]
Any final thoughts?
Essentially when something in your body is not moving properly it affects that area as well as other areas trying to compensate for the immobility. This can result in all sorts of interesting symptoms that steam from one primary issue. It’s my job to find that primary issue, fix it and then let your body deal with things properly as it knows innately how to do. I love what I do – come and find out how I can help you and your family.
