It seems everyone is getting sick so I felt it only fitting to throw down my top Netflix picks for the mom (and family) surviving flu season. Straight up, it has been a gong show here since mid-December with respect to health issues. I feel like we may finally be coming out of it. FINALLY. But not without a healthy dose of Netflix to get us through. In case you missed it, I’ll catch you up. I’ll even throw in my reco’s for the best shows to binge watch when Mom — and kids — are laid up.
For the mom who throws out her back
First there was the back injury about two weeks into December which left me in so much pain even *I* couldn’t stand to be around myself. I alternated between sitting, standing, walking and restless sleeping. Everything hurt. It was a solid 3 weeks before I even attempted a workout.
For the mom who gets the flu
Three days after that first workout I came down with the flu. ON MY BIRTHDAY, no less. In case you haven’t heard, the flu is rampant. I got the version with the cough-that-won’t-quit; I suppose I should be thankful my back was better by that time. It would be a full three weeks of that shit before I felt normalish again. But, I did start working out daily again and that felt awesome. In a “not awesome” kinda way.
For the mom whose kids get the flu
But wait, there’s more. Just as I was starting to come out of the worse part of the flu (that first week was nasty and I spent most of it curled up on the couch), you guessed it: the kids started dropping like flies. Over the next two weeks one by one they got fevers, aches, chills and coughs, all to varying degrees. We are still not 100% out of the woods but I feel like we are almost there.
For the mom whose family is hit with lice
Oh, you thought Flumageddon was the end of it? Ha! Nope. Because nothing speeds along flu recovery like getting hit with Lice Storm ’18. With one flowing right into the other, I went into autopilot. My husband, bless his heart — and also his adult male pheromones (because apparently lice don’t like grown men) — took care of the decontamination and laundry. Meanwhile, I set up the lice-removal station in my newly-renovated bathroom with Netflix front and centre.
For the mom who wants to #netflixandrun
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, rather, I set goals. Admittedly, 2018 got off to a slow start but I didn’t let that deter me from jumping back in the saddle. In addition to starting a new 6-week online bootcamp in mid-January (while still in the throes of coughing fits), I’ve begun incorporating some random 5K runs into my fitness routine. Even better is that I can rig the iPad to the treadmill and wear headphones so I can watch shows with questionable language while I run and the kids play. I will sweat these germs out of me any way I can.
For the moms who can’t sleep
I’ll be the first to admit I have horrible sleep habits. You know how everyone preaches sleep and rest when you’re sick? Yeah, I tried that. It didn’t work. First, when I threw out my back, lying down was incredibly uncomfortable and sleep was fractured. Second, with the flu, being in the prone position just made my coughing fits worse. So, I’d stay up late, sipping copious quantities of tea while watching Netflix funnies unapologetically until my eyelids drooped.
